THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: What the upcoming Piravom by-election  has to do with the arrest of the two Italian naval guards accused of killing two fishermen on February 15? If the Italian news websites are to be believed, the Italian Government feels it is a minor issue made complex by the political situation in the state. The site also claims that the authorities have photographic evidence that could exonerate the arrested men. According to Italian news website TMnews.it, the elections in the state have some influence on the action taken against the Italian naval guards, who were arrested on Sunday. The website quotes Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi who said that local elections would have some influence on the judicial authorities. He said that proper investigation would be held on strictly scrupulous standards as the greatest democratic country is an example for years, the website states. Surprisingly, Giulio Terzi said that from the conversation he had with Minister of Foreign Affairs S M Krishna, he came to know that local elections, which no doubt, has made the minor situation complex because emotions of people would affect the elections.“The situation is complex because it has the legal nature of both the international law and domestic law,” the website quotes the Minister on the sidelines of a Euro-Mediterranean meeting in Italy. The website TMnews also states that Italian authorities possess photographic evidence that can exonerate the arrested naval guards. The website claims that the photos show that the vessel, which came near Enrica Lexie, was not St Antony, as claimed by the Indian authorities, but another vessel. The website says the authorities would submit the photos in the Indian court.
