KOLLAM: The Joint Trade Union Council of Central PSU Indian Rare Earths (IRE) said that the management had served lay off notice on 300 workers of the Chavara unit of the company. The trade unions observed a black day at the company on Saturday.The representatives of various trade unions told reporters that the management had sought the permission of the Union Labour Secretary for the lay off, citing that operations cannot be continued owing to shortage of raw materials. They said that the company management had handed over a copy of the application to workers notifying the lay off on Friday.Meanwhile, the management sources, when contacted, were not ready to comment on the issue.The trade union leaders said that at a time when the Chavara unit was functioning profitably, the present crisis seems to be fabricated.
