Amid severe weather conditions followed by landslides in the Uttar Kannada district, forces of the Indian Army have been deployed in order to help rescue operations.
This district of Karnataka has been in turmoil after a massive landslide on July 18, reportedly claimed the lives of 10 people on National Highway 66 near Shirur village.
As a part of an immediate response, the Indian Army deployed two Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) teams from the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre (MLIRC) on July 21, 2024.
The teams comprise 1 officer, 2 Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), and 55 Other Ranks (OR), who are dedicated to conducting rescue operations in the affected areas, news agency ANI reported.
To further assist the rescue efforts, another team from the College of Military Engineering (CME) was also deployed on July, 22 2024. This is a specialized team trained for conducting ground penetration radar and consists of one JCO and two OR. This technique is crucial for detecting individuals trapped under debris.
The Karnataka government is working closely with the Indian Army, while providing necessary equipment and logistical support in order to ensure the rescue operations are efficient and effective.
The rescue work will probably go on for seven days, during which the Indian Army personnel will work in order to locatetrapped individuals, providing immediate medical assistance and relief.
The families of those who lost their lives due to the disater will be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh once the bodies are recovered.
On Tuesday, the body of a woman who went missing following the landslide was recovered from the Gangavalli river during search operation, taking the death toll to eight.
Vehicular traffic has been temporarily suspended on National Highway 66 following the landslide, which has led to protests, seeking passage, by truckers who have been stuck there for a week.
