Hyderabad: Citizens of Hyderabad have taken the initiative to tackle the rising menace of potholes and improve conditions of roads.

A concerned citizen in Hyderabad, Shiva Kiran along with ASCI has developed an app called ‘Pothole Marker’ which allows people to be alert about potholes at a particular location.

It’s a very simple app. If a citizen spots a pothole, he or she can click on its location on a city map, with latitude and longitude for exact location, and mark it red. If the pothole is repaired, it can be marked blue.

The app even allows the user to judge quality of work. If work is shoddy and incomplete, it can be marked red again.

Speaking to CNN News18, Kiran said, "The condition of the roads is very bad during monsoons. So we thought why not develop a tool where citizens can alert and agencies can take up repair work of those potholes. The app will bring in transparency and more accountability.”

"The app has two interface. First is where citizen can spot pothole and it sends the location to the central server. The server can accessed by concerned agency for repair. We are in touch in GHMC so that they can take it up. With this, the agencies can prioritize, like repair potholes on main roads first," he added.

The Telangana government has asked agencies to take up repair of roads on a war footing. Over 2, 000 potholes were identified for filling up across Hyderabad.

On Sunday, fed up with daily accidents caused due to potholes, senior citizens and women of Sainikpuri area of Hyderabad took upon themselves and filled the potholes in the area. The citizens undertook "Shramdaan".

"We gave several complaints to Cantonment board and other concerned authorities but no action was taken. Therefore, we all decided for our safety, we should repair the roads," said one citizen.
