A 32-year-old nurse was found dead with her throat slit in her house at Kodungaiyur and three-sovereign jewellery reportedly missing on Monday evening.
Police sources said an inquiry was on with the woman’s husband as they have suspicions that he could be behind the murder.
Police said the victim, Sumathi (32), who lived at Ambedkar Street, Krishnamurthy Nagar, Kodungaiyur, used to administer an insulin dose to Shanthi, a neighbour.
Shanthi found the nurse’s house open and the victim in a pool of blood. Police were alerted and her body was sent to Stanley Hospital for post mortem.
Police said she was alone as her husband was away at work and her children had gone for tuition. Sumathi was a staff nurse in a nursing home at MKB Nagar and had also offered her services to her diabetic neighbours by administering insulin injections, police said. She would either go to their homes or her they would come to her place to get injected.
The woman’s husband Muniraj (35) was working as an assistant manager in a construction company at T Nagar and the couple had two children Kamakshi (16), a plus-two student and Dhanalakshmi (14), a class 10 student. Police said the couple often quarrelled as Muniraj suspected his wife.
Police sources said they also are suspicious of a 35-year-old man, as neighbours claimed that they had seen him in the area some time before the woman was found murdered.
Police sources said that the gold jewellery could have been stolen to divert police attention as other gold ornaments the woman was wearing were left intact.
