New Delhi: The number of farmers killing themselves in Maharashtra because they can’t pay back loans is declining, said Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Tuesday.
The number of deaths because of loans has declined from 60 percent to 25 percent of the total deaths. "There is a sharp decline in the figures of suicides due to indebtness, as the government machinery was getting a good feedback on financial assistance extended to the next of kin of deceased farmers," PTI quoted Deshmukh as saying in Nagpur.
Deshmukh, who was campaigning for Congress candidates in the zilla parishad elections, said the government has distributed Rs 1,800 crore among farmers to control the agrarian crisis.
Deshmukh will visit Bangalore on March 24-25 to seek investors for the international passenger and cargo hub. He said there was no dispute between the state government and the Boeing Company over allocation of land.
