THRISSUR:  A 50-year-old motorcyclist was trampled to death and at least 14 people were injured, when an elephant ran amok at Kechery here on Thursday morning, creating panic for over two hours. The deceased has been identified as Pavaratti Manappadi Maliyekal Aloysiyus. The injured have been admitted to Amala Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, and Unity Hospital, Kunnamkulam.The pachyderm knocked down the motorcyclist on the road near Kechery and trampled him to death. The jumbo also attacked around 20 vehicles, including a private bus at Manali, injuring 13 passengers.The elephant’s mahout, Ashid, 25, was among those injured. Sinson, 36, Priyanka, 22, Magi, 36, Santhosh, 39, Jansi, 42, Shafiq, 25, Saritha, 22, Reshma, 21, Davis, 67, Aswathi, 20, Krishnakumar, 37, Finni, and Chorukutti suffered injuries in the incident.The tusker, Kuruppathu Shivasankaran, of Kecheri, was being taken to its owner’s home at Peridimannu, from Kechery, when it went on a rampage and all efforts to tame it went in vain. A large crowd gathered at the scene adding to the chaos and making it difficult for the police and the mahouts to bring the elephant under control.At least 10 houses were also damaged, said eyewitnesses. Among the vehicles damaged in the rampage, one belonged to the Chundal grama panchayat, while another was a school van, returning after dropping students. Experts from the elephant squad led by Dr P B Giridas and  Dr Rajeev tranquillised the jumbo near Pattikara Kizhakootu Church, police said. Mahouts from Guruvayur Mahout Training School were also present at the spot to assist the squad members.
