Counting begins in TN and Pondicherry
Counting of votes to decide the fate of 2586 candidates, including Jayalalithaa and DMK President M Karunanidhi began at 0800 hrs.

Chennai: Counting of votes to decide the fate of 2586 candidates, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and DMK President M Karunanidhi contesting the Assembly elections, began at (008 )hours IST on Thursday.

Similarly, the counting of votes to decide the electoral fortunes among others of Pondicherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, former Chief Ministers V Vaithilingam and R V Janakiraman and Puducherry Makkal Katchi leader P Kannan also began in the four counting centres in Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam.

Elaborate security arrangements have been made at the counting centres.

Central paramilitary forces will assist the state police in maintaining vigil. 284 Special Observers will monitor the counting process.

Party workers in large numbers have converged near the over 80 counting centres spread across Tamil Nadu and the four centres in the union territory comprising 30 constituencies.

The first results are expected to come at around 0930 hrs (IST)on Thursday.
