Doha: Olympic champion Chen Yanqing set three weightlifting world records on Sunday to win the women's 58-kg gold medal at the Asian Games. Chen hoisted 111 kg to eclipse the snatch record of 110 kg set by fellow Chinese Wang Li at Denpasar, Indonesia, in 2003.
She lifted 140 kg in the clean-and-jerk and 251 overall to beat compatriot Qu Wei's marks of 139 kg and 241 kg set at the world championships in Doha last year.
Ma Wenguan, a Chinese Olympic Committee official, said he was confident that Chen would set a world record at Doha. "We were planning to break the world record, and we did," he said.
Chen lifted 103 kg on her first attempt and 108 on her second before breaking the snatch record. In the clean-and-jerk, she lifted weights of 131 and 137 before setting the new mark.
