CHENNAI: A Chennai-based girl has done herself proud by becoming the first female student in the State to get a double digit rank in the IIT-JEE, the results of which were declared on Wednesday.E Dhivya secured the 96th all India rank among the 9,618 meritorious students who cleared the exams out of the 4.58 lakh students who wrote it. Dhivya is being touted as the first female student in Tamil Nadu to have secured a rank in the top 100 list. While the all India topper, Prithvi Tej from Vijayawada, also belonged to the IIT-Madras zone, at least 30 students from the zone featured in the top 100 list. Five students from the IIT-Madras zone made it to the top ten.In Tamil Nadu, Vipul Venkatraman, a student of Maharishi Vidyamandir School, topped the state with his all India rank of 63 followed by Yeshwanth C, who secured the second rank in the State, while getting an all India rank of 67.Dhivya’s achievement will set a new record for girls from Tamil Nadu aspiring for the most sought-after institutions. “In Tamil Nadu, for the past 5-6 years, no girls have secured top ranks even if you examine the top 1,000 ranks, except may be one girl. In that sense, Dhivya scoring a 96th rank should be a great inspiration for girl students in the state to join the IITs. Moreover, Dhivya is from a matriculation background. As far as I recollect, it was way back in 2002 that Priya from Delhi secured an all India rank (second rank) and in 2009, Vasuki secured all India rank nine,” explained Prof K K Anand, Director, Science and Mathematics Academy for Real Talents (SMART), where Dhivya underwent coaching for the IIT JEE exam.
