Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, prime minister, UK, cabinetNew Delhi: The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom has chosen his new Cabinet, naming 41-year-old David Miliband became Britain's youngest Foreign Secretary in 30 years.

Miliband is seen as close to former prime minister Tony Blair and was once tipped to run against Brown for the top job. He is still perceived as a possible future leader of the Labour Party and it was widely reported he would get a high-profile job in Brown's Cabinet.

Gordon Brown also named Alistair Darling as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Chancellor of the Exchequer portfolio was held by Brown himself for a decade before his elevation as Prime Minister.

Darling was Secretary of State for Trade and Industry in Tony Blair's ministry. Former foreign secretary Jack Straw was named Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor.

Meanwhile, Jacqui Smith became the country's first female Home Secretary as Prime Minister Gordon Brown unveiled a 22-member Cabinet a day after assuming office.

It was the first Cabinet with brothers - David and Ed Miliband - and a married couple, Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper.

Eleven members of the old Cabinet - including Blair and John Prescott - are not in Brown's administration and there were nine new faces. Defence Secretary Des Browne, 55, was the only minister to remain in his post.

Brown intends to appoint people from other parties too.

His predecessor Tony Blair though, had a less memorable day, being questioned by police for the third time in a scandal where the Labour party is accused of giving honours for money.
