BANGALORE: Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has announced that the expansion of the passenger terminal building will be started in June.
Making the announcement on Monday, BIAL officials said that the terminal, when completed, will double the existing terminal area of 70,000 sqm to near 140,000 sq meters. This will take the terminal capacity to over 17 million passengers per annum with flexibility to expand to 20 million, a requirement, that BIAL claims would meet the increasing traffic demand for the next few years. Simultaneously, a comprehensive review of the master plan is underway.
Managing director of BIAL G V Sanjeev Reddy stated that the design of the expanded terminal will sport an entirely enhanced and modern design elevation. He said that the expansion would take approximately 18 months from commencement of construction to completion. The construction partners for this project chosen are Larsen and Toubro, through an international competitive bidding process, he said.Adding to this, the vicepresident of BIAL G V K Reddy said that expansion has come along side the rapid growth of the airport and increasing capacity.'Successful The Bangalore International Airport also completed three successful years of operations on Monday. Handling 33,000 passenger movements and 330 air traffic movements daily, the airport is growing at an annual rate of 18 per cent, the officials claimed. The annual cargo tonnage handled at the airport increased by 24.6 per cent, crossing 224,000 metric tonnes of cargo for the past year taking the annual growth rate of cargo handling at 24.6 per cent.The renewed landscaping over 49 acres reflects the flora of the city, the BIAL officials said.
