KOCHI: Jewellery stores in the city were teeming with customers on Tuesday as Kochiites rushed to make ‘golden investments’ on Akshaya Tritiya, the auspicious day, believed to multiply one’s investment.Attractive offers, like discounts, EMIs and free gold coins on every purchase were announced to grab the maximum number of customers.“People started pouring in around 5 pm on Monday as this year’s Akshaya Tritiya fell between Monday evening and Tuesday night. We had a tough time in managing the heavy crowd and in keeping up with their demands,” said Rogers Wilson, general manager of a jewellery store on MG Road.According to jewellery store owners, gold coins were the most sought-after item this season. “Since legend has it that buying gold on this particular day will increase one’s fortune, people ensure that they buy some amount of gold. Those with budget constraints prefer gold coins. But there are others who buy coins as the resale value of coins will not depreciate like ornaments,” said a jewellery shop employee.“Major purchases like those for marriages were kept aside for other days as they are time-consuming. Bangles, earrings, rings and such small items were a major hit and there were also people who bought bigger items like necklaces,” he said. Though a majority of the customers were regular Akshaya Tritiya-shoppers, there were some who were out to check the truth in the legend. “This is the first time that I am buying gold  for Akshaya Tritiya. Since everybody seems to talk about its speciality, I decided to check it out,” said Bismi Ajil, a customer.  “I do not belong to Kochi and I am here on a holiday. Since Akshaya Tritiya happened to fall around the same time, I decided to buy some gold,” said Jojo Jose.
