CHENNAI: Amid tankers and freight ships anchored across the bay, for a change there were a completely different class of boats gearing up on the Marina coast to set sail on Friday. Colourful and sporty looking sail boats dot the Marina. At this year’s National Sailing Regatta, close to 15 ‘420’ sized boats battled to come out tops. Organised by the Royal Madras Yacht Club (RMYC), there are sailors of all ages from places like Mumbai, Pune, Bhopal and Hyderabad. A little away from the pro-sailors, a bunch of excited kids stood waiting with life jackets on. The children had been trained by the pro-sailors on the nuances of sailing. Now, at the end of their training, they get to compete in the regatta, albeit in a junior category. “Most of them start sailing at the age of eight and nine itself,” said Gayathree Krishna, a member of RMYC. The kids from GHS Market School in Hyderabad were an excited lot. Hailing from under-privileged homes, they have been trained by the Hyderabad Yacht Club and qualified to compete in the regatta.
