Actor Aamir Khan will now be seen in a new avatar. Months after the Central government removed him as the brand ambassador of the 'Incredible India' campaign, the Maharashtra government is likely to make the actor the brand ambassador for its flagship drought-relief project.
The project 'Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyaan' aims at water conservation in 25,000 drought hit villages across the state and make it a drought-free state by 2019. The project involves deepening and widening of streams, construction of cement and earthen stop dams, work on nullahs and digging of farm ponds. The project aims to make 5000 villages free of water scarcity every year.
The actor was recently caught in the midst of an "intolerance debate" when he said he is "alarmed" by a number of incidences in the country and his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave the country.
Though he later said that neither he, nor his wife had any intentions of leaving the country. "We never did, and nor would we like to in the future. Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said. India is my country, I love it, I feel fortunate for being born here, and this is where I am staying," he said in a statement on Wednesday.
Bollywood superstars Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra had replaced Aamir as the brand ambassadors of 'Incredible India' campaign. While Aamir's removal as the face of 'Incredible India' was seen as the consequence of his comments on the intolerance issue, the tourism ministry had said they had not hired the actor but had left it to an agency to do that.
