Seven policemen were injured on Wednesday when around 800 villagers pelted stones at them and also set some mining vehicles ablaze in Jobner area in Jaipur to protest mining activities on a hillock.
The mob also tried to hold Deputy SP Rajpal Singh hostage but he was freed and nine persons were arrested in this connection, SP, Jaipur (Rural) Ashok Naruka told PTI.
"Nearly 800 people had gathered to attend the meeting near Ugariawas village. They climbed the hillock and burnt half a dozen vehicles including earthmoving machines and one SUV," Naruka said.
The mob tried to hold Deputy SP Singh, who was injured, and his gunman hostage but they were freed, he said.
"A company of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary conducted flag march in the area and the situation is under control now," he said.
The residents of the village were opposing mining for one and a half months. "It is a legal mine but the residents are opposing it saying mining activity poses threat to a religious place located on the hillock and the local ecology. The mine was owned by someone else who on facing resistance by the villagers transferred the lease to Sunil Tank about two months ago," the SP said.
