Dr Kamala Selvaraj, a pioneer in the field of infertility research, said the major causes for infertility among males are viral infections at young age, smoking, drinking, drugs and family history of illness. Selvaraj was delivering a lecture organized by the Medical Education Unit, along with the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI) in Puducherry.
Selvaraj, associate director at the fertility research centre, GG hospital in Chennai, also said that in females, irregular periods, unusual size of the uterus, defects in fallopian tubes could also lead to infertility.
People over the age of 35, patients affected with diabetes, hypertension and obesity can also generate the problem of infertility, Selvaraj added. She said that the advent of the concept of test tube baby has unveiled many facts about infertility and the ways of managing it.
Selvaraj said that in India, among the males, 8-12 per cent, among females 25-37 per cent and both 21-38 per cent are infertile. If a woman is not getting pregnant even after 24 months of healthy intercourse, then it can be termed as a case of infertility in either of the partners.
She said that innovations like freezing or storing of eggs has become a boon for patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy and for this the semen bank and ovum bank have been a common concept.
“Womb for rent is a new concept fast emerging in this field,” Selvaraj added. Later Selvaraj said that concept of managing the Infertility problem has become a major boon for so many.
