In Group B, Spain beat Zambia 2-1 and Uruguay edged Jordan 1-0 to put them on course for the next phase.

Japan defeated Costa Rica 1-0 in Victoria with Atomu Tanaka scoring the decisive goal in the 68th minute, converting a low cross from Tsukasa Umesaki.

Ezekiel Bala scored both Nigeria's goals against Scotland, taking advantage of some poor defending.

Nigeria had defender Efe Ambrose sent off eight minutes from the end.

A 40th minute goal from Edison Cavani gave Uruguay a narrow win over Jordan in Burnaby.

Cavani slotted home after a cross from Gerardo Vonder Putten but Uruguay had to hang on as Jordan twice hit the woodwork in search for an equaliser.

A penalty from Mario Saurez on the half-hour mark set Spain on the way against Zambia and Juan Manuel Mata's goal 10 minutes later doubled the advantage.

Zambia fought hard and pulled one back through William Njobvu in the 74th minute.

Thursday's games see hosts Canada take on Austria and Chile up against Congo in Edmonton while in Toronto, New Zealand face Gambia and Mexico challenge Portugal.
