2023 has been a rather significant year for Tara Sutaria. She might have made her film debut with Student Of The Year 2 but it was Apurva, her first solo-led film, that propelled her to critical acclaim and helped change the industry and the audience’s perception about her from being a glamorous star to a notable actor. On the personal front, Tara has also been in headlines in the past few months for her break-up with Aadar Jain.
In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, she looks back at the year gone by and says, “There has been lots of learning and newness with Apurva releasing, which is the first film I headlined. It’s been a really special time in my life. There has been lots of ups throughout the year and some painful lows too. It has been an interesting process and journey for me, personally and professionally.”
Tara’s gritty performance in Apurva also grabbed the attention of several of her contemporaries and filmmakers like Arjun Kapoor, Kartik Aaryan, Mukesh Chhabra and Punit Malhotra, who took to social media to laud her. Talking about how she has always sought this kind of a feedback from the fraternity, she shares, “There are so many messages and calls I’ve received from people from the industry and outside that have been extremely touching for me. It’s something that I’ve been really looking forward to. Since I’ve been waiting for it for a very long time, it feels like things are finally falling into place.”
And has that helped instill self-confidence? “When it comes to validation and confidence, I always had that in myself. I just needed the right project and opportunity to showcase the skill set that I always had,” Tara asserts candidly.
For the 28-year-old, 2023 taught her that perception matters and the shift in it is ‘a key part of this business and profession’. But she’s quick to add that it’s ‘unfortunate’ people never really could look at her acting prowess beneath the image she’s known for. “I didn’t know this earlier. It’s unfortunate because this is who I’ve been all along but people haven’t been able to tap into it or see me in this sort of space as a performer and actor. I’m grateful that it’s happening now. This is my sixth film and I’ve a long way to go.”
So, is she noticing a change in the kind of scripts coming her way? “The film has already opened so many doors in terms of the possibility of more projects in this space that doesn’t put me in a box. There’s a huge conversation that’s happening among so many people in the industry which makes me very happy. The kind of scripts and narratives that I’m getting now are exactly the sort of things that I was looking forward to,” states the Marjaavaan and Ek Villain Returns actor.
