Right from the time its title and first glimpse was unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con International last year to its screening at the Moscow International Film Week last week, Kalki 2898 AD has been creating waves, globally. The Nag Ashwin directorial starring Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Prabhas and Deepika Padukone is currently the highest-grossing Indian film and the highest-grossing Telugu film of 2024. As fans are rejoicing its digital release on Netflix and Prime Video, they’re also eagerly looking forward to its sequel.
Kalki 2 will focus on Yaskin’s character (played by Kamal), the antagonist of the franchise, as he embarks on his perilous mission. And as per reports, it’s expected to take three years to complete. Prabhas has also hinted that the sequel will be divided into two parts. Some portions of it were shot over a period of 20 days in the earlier schedules when part one was being filmed. And now, News18 Showsha has an exclusive update on when Kalki 2 is set to roll.
At the Moscow International Film Week, producers and sister duo Priyanka Dutt (also Nag’s wife) and Swapna Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies caught up with us and spilled the beans on the second instalment of the mythological sci-fi franchise. “The filming will start in the next five or six months (January or February 2025). Once it starts, we’ll be able to talk more about it,” Priyanka told us.
The siblings went on to divulge that they’re less anxious about filming the sequel than they were in 2021 when they took Kalki 2898 AD to the floor. “This time around, there’s a lot more excitement than nervousness. I think there will be a lot more planning now. Whatever we did for part one, we were all just going by Nag Ashwin’s vision. It often happens that you don’t understand most of the things until you actually see the visuals. Now that we’ve seen everything that Nagi has done and understood the way the audience has received it, we’re going on to part two with an altogether different energy,” elaborated Swapna.
And have they gotten down to celebrating the success of the first film? “We’re still figuring it out,” laughed Swapna. Priyanka added, “We’ve only been chatting on the WhatsApp group, writing to each other, ‘Guys, we should celebrate.’ I think our celebration will be when we start the shoot of Kalki 2 because that’s when we will truly be able to celebrate the fact that our stress is finally over!”
Kalki 2898 AD was also a trailblazer of sorts as apart from featuring of a set of actors from different film industries, it also received a thumbs-up from several members of the film fraternity from all over India like Ranveer Singh, Atlee, Varun Dhawan, and SS Rajamouli, among others. Sharing her thoughts on it, Priyanka said, “It’s a big support. We received a lot of love from different influential actors and actresses in its first weekend post-release. It felt like they all came together to market and advertise the film without asking for anything in return.”
