MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are widely regarded as two of the greatest captains in the history of Indian Premier League. Their record is a proof – both have won five IPL titles as captains – the joint-most in the competition’s 16-year history.
While both Dhoni and Rohit have represented two different IPL franchises but spent a majority of their careers with Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians respectively.
Dhoni has been the captain of CSK from the inception of IPL barring the two seasons they were suspended when he turned out for the new defunct Rising Pune Supergiant.
On the other hand, Rohit began his IPL journey turning out for the erstwhile Deccan Chargers and won a title as a player before joining MI.
Ahead of the 17th season of the IPL, expected to get underway in late March, four legends of the game including Wasim Akram, Matthew Hayden, Dale Steyn and Tom Moody picked their choice for the captain of an all-time IPL squad of 15.
And it was a unanimous choice.
“You don’t have to be an ex-cricketer, cricket pundit or a rocket scientist to pick this. It’s MS Dhoni,” said Akram on Star Sports’ show Incredible 16.
Moody, who was the coach when Sunrisers Hyderabad won their only IPL title in 2016, agreed and said, “He (Dhoni) has won titles with average squads as well.”
Hayden, a former teammate of Dhoni at CSK and a title winner himself, said while Rohit is an incredible leader but Dhoni is his captain whom he also picked as his coach for the side.
“It’s not even a debate. Of course Rohit Sharma is an incredible leader. I’m not going to pick a coach because MS Dhoni is also my coach. You get both with MS Dhoni. He’s has the legacy. There’s my bold prediction,” Hayden said.
