Having Gautam Gambhir back in the Kolkata Knight Riders camp turned out to be a historic move made by the team management. The former captain, in the new role of a mentor, inspired the Shreyas Iyer-led side to a third title victory last Sunday in Chennai. KKR thrashed the Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets to be crowned as the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 champions.
But Gambhir’s magic looked like a single-season affair as reportedly, he is the frontrunner to succeed Rahul Dravid as India’s next head coach after the ICC T20 World Cup. If Gambhir takes up the job, he has to leave the KKR camp again to serve the Indian cricket team till December 31, 2027. However, the former India opener has added a fresh twist to the entire episode with his remarks in a recent interview.
Speaking with Sportskeeda, Gambhir said the Knight Riders may have won their third title this season but they are yet to match the tallies Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians of five trophies.
“If you ask me, we are still two trophies away from Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Yes, I’m happy and content today. But again, the hunger is still there, and we are yet to become the most successful franchise in IPL. To become that, we have to win the trophy three more times. You have to work really hard to win it thrice. So, the next mission is – if we can make KKR the best-ever team – there is no better feeling than that,” Gambhir told Sportskeeda.
The deadline to apply for the post of Indian head coach ended on Monday, a day after the KKR lifted the trophy in Chennai. According to reports from Cricbuzz, high-profile personalities, with connections to the BCCI, have stated that Gambhir’s appointment to the top post is almost inevitable with the BCCI pitching themselves hard to the former Indian batter and WC-winner Gambhir.
It was also noted that a high-profile owner of an IPL franchise, close to the BCCI top brass, told the website that Gambhir’s appointment as the head coach is a ‘done deal’ and it will be announced after the IPL final. However, Gambhir apparently has remained silent on the matter, even amongst the ranks of his KKR teammates and members, who were reportedly answered with a shrug of the shoulders and a smile.
