Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari, once known as the world’s heaviest man weighing over 610 kilos, underwent a life-altering transformation in the last decade and now weighs 68 kilos, losing a staggering 542kg (which is almost 89% of his body weight).
West Asian news media outlets reported that 33-year-old Shaari, who had to be airlifted and transported from his hometown in Jazan to Riyadh, has been weighing roughly 63.5 kilos since last year.
Saudi Arabia’s former King Abdullah played a major role in his transformation as he was deeply moved by hearing about Shaari’s health condition in 2013. He took the responsibility of treating Shaari, who was a teen at the time and was bedridden for almost three years.
He helped devise a special operation where Shaari was transported out of his home using a forklift and a specially designed bed and brought to Riyadh. Before being brought out of his home, the teen, suffering from extreme obesity, was very reliant on family and friends for even the most basic needs.
He was rendered immobile due to his extreme obesity and was about to lose his life.
A team of 30 medical professionals were brought together to oversee his recovery. After he was brought to Riyadh, he was shifted to King Fahd Medical City, where he underwent gastric bypass surgery.
He was put on a meticulously tailored diet and exercise regimen and the results started to show within six months as he had lost nearly half of his body weight. The medical team’s intensive care and physiotherapy also contributed to his progress.
A custom-made wheelchair helped him with his mobility issues and allowed him to participate in physical therapy. Shaari still requires mechanical assistance to sit up.
He also earned the nickname of “the smiling man” from the medical staff for his enduring optimism.
