While dogs are considered a man’s best friend, it is never safe to leave them alone around kids. A couple in Australia realised this after witnessing the excruciating death of their five-month-old baby boy. Their pet dog, an American Staffordshire Terrier, mauled the infant to death past midnight. The incident took place earlier this month, and the family has since been in utter shock.
According to the ABC News, police were informed about the incident of a ‘baby being mauled by a dog’ at 2:18 am on July 11. Local authorities rushed to the family house in Kariong town in the Central Coast region of New South Wales.
District Commander Detective Superintendent Darryl Jobson said the police performed CPR on the child, and paramedics also arrived a short time later, but the five-month-old could not be saved. The child was then rushed to hospital for medical formalities.
The five-month-old’s mother, shattered by the fatal episode, was also taken to hospital in an ambulance.
Jobson called the incident a “matter of tragic proportions”, adding that they will not reveal the full details of the dog attack out of respect for the grieving family.
“Our thoughts are certainly with the parents, the family, friends and also the first responders involved in this incident,” Jobson was quoted as saying by ABC News.
Incidentally, the American Staffordshire Terrier had previously killed another dog in the neighbourhood. Police said the four-week-old incident was a separate one, but will be a part of their investigation.
The neighbours have also been shocked by the incident. Coen Moncolet, who lives on the same street, said he is feeling for the unfortunate family as he himself has toddlers in the house. Whereas Trudy Adamson, another nearby resident, has not been able to process the “devastating” incident. Trudy, however, added that she is available for the family in this hour of need.
Meanwhile, the pet dog is expected to be later euthanised. Police confirmed that the American Staffordshire Terrier was a registered pet.
