Rahamim 'Rami' Shy, 46, who co-ordinated the US government's strategy to combat terrorists from Al Qaeda and the Taliban, is accused of arranging the commission of a child sex offence

A former policy adviser to the ex-US President Barack Obama has appeared in court in the UK charged with child sex offences, British media reports said.

Rahamim ‘Rami’ Shy is also charged with possession of two category C indecent images of children and possessing a prohibited image of a child, Britain’s Daily Mail reported, citing court documents. The 46-year-old who co-ordinated the US government’s strategy to combat terrorists during Obama’s tenure is accused of arranging the commission of a child sex offence.

The former Obama advisor, who lives in New Jersey, and worked for the White House under State Secretary Hillary Clinton, was arrested in late February by Bedfordshire Police, the newspaper said.

Shy was charged the following day and appeared at Luton Crown Court via video link from Bedford on Friday wearing a grey prison-issue tracksuit. Shy, formerly an executive at Citi, served in senior roles at the US Treasury Department from 2008 to 2014, focusing on countering terrorism financing and advising on sanctions.

He also provided strategic analysis to US Department of Defense chiefs of staff and worked as a senior adviser to diplomat Richard Holbrooke. Deployed to Afghanistan, he offered expertise to ISAF and presented US strategy to Congress in 2010. A Rutgers University alum, he studied international security policy at Columbia University. No longer with Citi, Shy faces trial in August.
