There is no end to the diverse records being documented under the prestigious Guinness Book of World Records (GWR). Recently, an adventurous act was added to this ever-increasing list of records. A Polish man set a new record by being the first person to spend more than four hours standing inside a box of ice. Lukasz Szpunar (53) made the record for the longest full-body contact with ice, lasting 4 hours and 2 minutes. He surpassed the previous record by 50 minutes.

In order to set this record, Lukasz Szpunar made sure that all body parts except the head and neck remained submerged throughout the act. All he could wear were swimming trunks. Reportedly, Lukasz used a mouthguard to prevent his chattering teeth from harming themselves. As per the Guinness World Records’ official report, Lukasz had some discomfort initially, which gradually subsided but he again felt it towards the end. Furthermore, his body temperature and level of consciousness were regularly checked while he was in the ice box. By the time he reached the unique four-hour mark, safety officials opted to halt the attempt.

Lukasz Szpunar stated that he chose to break the record because he is quite fond of walruses, a name used to designate cold-exposure enthusiasts. He stated in the report, “Because of my love for the cold, I wanted to test myself this time by sitting in the ice itself.”

The record breaker had earlier finished second at the Polish Walrus Championships, when he sat for more than four hours in a tub of near-freezing water. According to Lukasz, tough tasks make him “feel alive”. He climbed four of Poland’s highest mountain summits wearing only shorts. Furthermore, Lukasz is a co-organizer of the ‘Lake of Angels’ initiative, where he and fellow walruses take a monthly swim in Lake Tarnobrzeg at daybreak. They donate the earnings to the House of Angels Hospice for children with cancer.

Meanwhile, the record for the longest duration of full body contact with ice has been tracked since 2000, when athlete and motivational speaker Wim Hof made an achievement of 30 minutes. Poland has recently dominated the record, with the country producing the last three male record holders as well as the previous female record holder.
