Watch: Lightning Strikes At Goa Airport, Damages Runway Lights
While North India is blazing with record-high temperatures, many states grapple with flood-inducing rains.

Monsoon is eagerly awaited by the people as it will bring relief from the brutal heat. However, the impacts of climate change have made these rains more perilous, often causing flooding. This is currently being experienced in various parts across India. Recently, Goa witnessed heavy rains and thunder, with lightning striking the Manohar International Airport (MIA) on May 22 around 5.15 pm. The lightning caused damage to the runway edge lights.

This led to the diversion of six flights. After almost two hours, the damaged lights were rectified to bring the airport operations to normalcy. No injuries have been reported. A video that shows the bolt of lightning hitting the airport is now going viral on social media.

Meanwhile, Kerala, where the onset of monsoons has brought continuous rainfall, has been waterlogged in various areas, including Kochi. On May 28, a video from Kochi went viral, showing waterlogged roads near Lulu Mall. The undated video captured people navigating the flooded streets with caution and traffic moving slowly. The Instagram account Bangalore Malayalees shared the clip, captioning it, “Visuals from Edapally, near to Lulu mall.”

Many Instagram users criticised the authorities for not preparing ahead of monsoons by cleaning up drains. Commenting on it, an Instagram user wrote, “Rains are normal in Kerala. There are streams and rivers to redirect the extra water. But with the negligence of the authorities, the roads and drains are not improved and we get this.”

Another person wrote, “Canals need to be cleaned at least 2 months before the monsoon starts. Everyone is on tour here. Who has time to look at these things.” Another person wrote, “There is no point crying at this point. we keep voting for the people who haven’t even heard of city planning, so cry in silence now.”

ANI also shared a video from Kerala’s Kottayam district which was partially flooded in some areas. The strong winds were swaying big trees. People wee also seen preparing their boats in case of an emergency evacuation.
