A bizarre burglary unfolded in Tamil Nadu where a thief not only stole cash and valuables from a house but left an unexpected apology note promising to return the stolen items in a month. According to a report by The Times of India, the incident occurred at the home of retired teachers Chithirai Selvin and his wife in Megnanapuram’s Sathankulam road.
The couple had left for their son’s house in Chennai on June 17. They had hired a domestic help to regularly clean their house during their absence. When she returned to their house on June 26 evening, the maid was shocked to see the door open and promptly alerted the police.
Upon investigation, the authorities inspected the house and found that the thief had stolen Rs 60,000 cash, two pairs of gold earrings and silver anklets. However, what stood out was a handwritten apology note left by the intruder. The note expressed regret for the theft explaining an urgent need for the money to cover medical expenses of a family member and promised to return the stolen items within a month, as per the publication. Written in Tamil on an envelope with a green ink, the note read: “Forgive me. I will return (it) in one month. Someone sick in my house.”
The Megnanapuram police have initiated an investigation after registering a case regarding the incident.
A similar case unfolded in China’s Shanghai where a thief broke into an office and stole a watch and laptop leaving a surprising note behind for the owner, advising an upgrade to the security measures in the office. The burglar managed to enter the office premises by scaling the building’s outer wall.
Inside, he took a few electronic devices and gathered mobile phones and laptops piling them onto a desk. He left a note under the pile of the digital devices explaining that he refrained from taking more to avoid damaging the business. The note also advised the owner to upgrade their security system.
“Dear boss, I took a wristwatch and a laptop. You should improve your anti-theft system. I did not take all the phones and laptops, fearing it might hurt your business. Contact me if you want your laptop and phone back,” the note read.
The police swiftly tracked down the thief using public surveillance cameras and tracing the phone number he had left behind. He was arrested a few hours after the crime.
