A railway passenger travelling in the AC compartment of Bhubaneswar-Junagarh Express was shocked when she saw rodents scurrying around the coach. Jasmita Pati shared an incriminating video that showed the rat on the coach floor, alongside a photo of the dusty railway compartment. She wrote, “Shocked by the sight of rats scurrying around and the appalling cleanliness conditions on this train ride. Something urgently needs to be done to address this issue.” In her post, she also tagged the Ministry of Railways, Central Railway and Railway Seva, the customer support service of Indian Railways.
In the following post, the woman mentioned that railway helpline number 139 was unreachable when she first tried to register a complaint. She also claimed that the railway staff dismissed her concerns when she raised hygiene concerns. Pati wrote, “139 wasn’t reachable when we tried. Plus when you ask the attendant or TT to look into it, they brush it under the carpet.”

Railway Seva responded to this post and asked Pati to share her train’s PNR number and her mobile number so that they could look into the matter. After she shared the travel details, the railway responded with the standard message that her “complaint has been registered on RailMadad and complaint no. has been sent through SMS on your mobile no.”
Pati’s post about the train’s dismal cleanliness status also prompted another passenger to share that he too saw a rat and cockroaches inside the Jnaneswari Super Fast Express. The X user wrote, “Facing the same issue in 12101 Jnaneswari Super Fast Express A1 coupe that departed on 19th March (yesterday night). And it was a bigger mouse. Called the attendee, he said there is a hole below the seat which he plugged with the cover that contained the mattresses and towels. Spot the cockroach for good measure!!”

In October last year, a railway passenger shared a disturbing video that showed rats feasting on the food kept in the pantry of the Mumbai-Madgaon Express. Mangirish Tendulkar, who took this incriminating video, shared it on Instagram which went viral across social media platforms.

In his post, Tendulkar wrote that when he raised the issue with a Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, his concerns were dismissed as the RPF personnel told him that there are “500 to 600 rats under the tracks, so what is the problem if 5 or 6 of them get inside.” When he escalated the matter, the pantry manager agreed that there were rats inside the pantry but they were unable to do anything about it as they always get substandard coaches from the railways.
