One of the most challenging jobs might be that of a traffic police. Day in and day out, they have to reinforce traffic rules to make sure that the citizens abide by the laws. There are a few people who refuse to adhere to these rules. Either they will drive without a helmet, exceed the speed limit, drive rashly, have no licence, take the wrong side or engage in stunts on the road. The traffic police then issue a challan against them and impose a hefty fine. In Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur, the traffic police decided to adopt a unique way, which might have been a leaf out of the school teacher’s way of disciplining students.
In Burhanpur city of Madhya Pradesh, the traffic police realised that drivers were breaking traffic rules and when a challan was issued against them, they paid a hefty fine and went back to breaking the traffic rules again. They decided to raise awareness by changing the method of punishment. So when a man named Varun Patil and his wife – riding pillion – came from the wrong side, instead of asking for a fine, they were made to write an apology note.
The traffic police of Burhanpur, who were stationed near Collector Road, were keeping an eye on the movement of vehicles from Sindhi Basti. Varun Patil was not wearing any helmet and instead had his head covered with a thin towel on his head. The traffic police caught him and punished him creatively to ensure he remembered it.
In an interview with Local 18, Varun Patil shared that he was going with his wife to his friend’s place in the Indira Colony area. He said, “I forgot that I was taking the vehicle on the wrong side. When the police stopped me and explained to me, I also felt that I had made a mistake.” He wrote an apology letter, where he had to write that “I will not ride the bike on the wrong side” 100 times. The traffic police’s unique punishment will make people realise their mistakes and make them more aware. They will also refrain from committing such a mistake again.
Varun Patil promised to pass on the information to 10-20 people in his family and friend circle and will explain that they should not drive on the wrong side of the road. This way, they will also be able to escape the punishment.
As per the traffic police, the unique punishment started on April 2. Till April 5, about 30 people drove on the wrong side of the road and the traffic police made them write an apology note. When people saw this scene of drivers writing an apology letter, they too felt it was the best action.
