'It's More Cringe Than Regular One': Marathi Show's English Dub Has Internet Laughing

In this globalised age, neither language nor geography can limit our access to entertainment. The beauty of cinema defies linguistic borders. Thanks to the art of dubbing, we can enjoy a Spanish thriller, a French drama, or a Japanese animation in our native language. Dubbing fundamentally entails replacing the original voice recording with a new one in a different language. However, how much of the original essence and nuance is retained in translation remains a critical question.

A video on X recently featured a Marathi daily serial titled Tu Tevha Tashi dubbed into English for African audiences and we’re thinking that practically everything was lost in translation.

“English dubbed versions of Marathi daily soaps sound super weird. They’re showing them on Zee Africa,” reads the caption followed by two crying emojis.

The show’s name was changed to “Never Too Late for Love”. In the video, a woman donning a black shalwar suit with a yellow dupatta approaches another woman donning a purple and scarlet saree. Demanding that the other woman “look down,” the saree-clad woman says, “Back off, get back.”

After that, the bride at an Indian wedding is seen softly kicking a pot of rice on the ground as she approaches her new house. Dramatic background music heightens the suspense as the woman in the saree says, “It is the threshold of the Paatwardhan family house,” in an irate tone. Then she gets smacked by an elderly woman who says, “This house right here belongs to both Saraf and me.”

Afterwards, she pulls Navika, the woman dressed in a black suit, towards the pot. As she walks into the house, Navika completes the custom by giving the rice pot a gentle kick.

The video has more than 7 lakh views on the social media platform.

A user commented, “What in actual tarnation.”

Another user said, “I’m laughing hysterically.”

“I will watch this one, it’s more cringy than the regular one,” said a user.

Another comment read, “WHAT, There is a TV channel called Zee Africa, I wanna see the whole episode in English now.”

Yet another user went on to say, “Now we have to wonder which is funnier – English dubs of Marathi shows or Hindi dubs of Hollywood movies.”
