Ghostly encounters can send shivers down anyone’s spine. These stories can take a whole new level particularly when the darkness sets in. There are various locations in the world, popular for their mysterious history and stories related to ghosts. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, a dark underground tunnel in London is believed to be home to a phantom hitchhiker who takes drivers under the murky River Thames.
Let’s move on to the tunnel’s mystery now. It dates back to the time before the route became the notorious traffic hotspot it is today. If folklore and urban legend enthusiasts are to be trusted, the hitchhiker has been haunting the visitors of the tunnel since the early 1970s. Icy Sedgwick, a folklore podcaster, claimed the hitchhiker primarily preferred motorcyclists to drivers. A biker claimed being stopped by a hitchhiker who wanted to be dropped at Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.
The biker even shared that the passengers had disappeared when they reached the end of the tunnel. That’s not all. He was shocked to have witnessed what happened in the tunnel. But, given his curiosity, he decided to visit the address given to him by the hitchhiker. When he reached the specific address, he was greeted by a woman. What followed next left him scared. The woman told him that a young man had lost his life in a motorcycle crash.
The podcaster, Icy Sedgwick, also cited a letter in his podcast wherein the fatal accident that occurred in 1960, claiming the life of a motorcyclist, was described. The letter, as claimed in the reports, appeared in Fortean Times in 1994. A week after the accident, exactly at 2 am, a sound could be heard ringing exactly at the place where the tragic event took place.
Now, the mystery around the tunnel and hitchhiker’s story has become an urban legend. Even a tragedy also took place in the tunnel – during the construction that involved 800 workers putting their efforts into the same, seven people lost their lives.
