When the saying ‘laughter is the best medicine’ took a literal turn, it became the miraculous remedy for a US woman who triumphed over a 5-year coma with nothing but laughter. Yes, you read that correctly! Jennifer Flewellen, hailing from Niles, Michigan, encountered a car accident in September 2017 that plunged her into an “irreversible coma.” However, her healing journey took an extraordinary turn when she woke up laughing in response to her mother’s joke on August 25, 2022, defying the odds after precisely four years and 11 months.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Peggy Means, the ‘miracle’ mom, shared the spine-tingling moment she realised her daughter was emerging from the depths of her coma. Laughter erupted in response to a joke, a sound Means had never heard from her daughter before, initially sending shivers down her spine.
Undeterred by the initial shock, Means continued, “Every dream came true. Today’s the day I said, ‘That door that was closed, that kept us apart, had just opened. We were back’.” Although Flewellen didn’t fully awaken as she still couldn’t speak, her mother noted the extraordinary sign of nodding, signaling progress and hope.

Since that magical moment, Flewellen’s strength has surged, enabling her to attend her son’s football game in October of the previous year.
“Dr. Ralph Wang, her physician, describes her recovery as rare, emphasising the significant progress she has achieved. Jennifer’s journey includes participating in a football celebration for her youngest son and undergoing additional therapy for continued improvement. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support her recovery efforts,” proclaimed the caption of the post shared by Pubity, sending the internet into a frenzy, with everyone yearning to uncover the mysterious joke!
One eager commenter pleaded, “Would you share what the joke was? I am desperate to hear it, please.” Another chimed in, “What was the joke, please? I’m dying to know,” echoing the sentiments of many.
Meanwhile, the 60-year-old mom, Means, holds onto hope for her daughter’s full recovery, prompting the family to kickstart a GoFundMe to cover the necessary expenses for Flewellen’s recovery both at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and in the future.

The GoFundMe outlines plans to acquire a handicap van, a key to unlocking Flewellen’s freedom, facilitating her travel to appointments, and therapy, and helping her rediscover the world after years of bed confinement. When complimented on appearing ready to conquer the world, Flewellen confidently responded, “I am.”
