We know education is a necessity, but the high cost of getting children educated nowadays prompts everyone to reassess the concept. Is it truly confined to being a need or has it morphed into a luxury? A recent outcry by a real estate consultant in Gurugram reignited this debate when he aired his grievances about his son’s exorbitant school fees, which persistently escalate at a rate of 10% per annum.
Taking to ‘X’, Udit Bhandari revealed the frustrating trend of yearly fee hikes without any plausible explanation from the school authorities. Adding to that, when objections arise, he stated how they casually suggest seeking alternative schools.

Describing how his son, currently in Grade 3, attends a well-known CBSE school in Gurugram with a monthly fee of Rs. 30,000, Mr. Bhandari estimated that if the school continues this 10% annual fee hike, he would end up paying around Rs. 9,00,000 per annum when his son reaches Class 12.
My son’s school fees have been consistently compounding at 10%/annum. The school does not even bother to explain the hike and the higher fee simply appears on the payment app! When parents protested, they said please look for another school for your kids!— Udit Bhandari (@GurugramDeals) April 9, 2024
Soon, the post gained traction, sparking a flurry of comments from the public, especially parents facing similar problems, who voiced their opinions in the comment section.
One individual lamented, “Same here with DPS. You can’t object to anything. 10% hike every year, books with inflated MRP they even provide stationery and you can’t buy it from outside. They change dress, shoes every year so nobody can use their old one.”
Another shared, “My friend’s daughter is in an International Board school in Bangalore in class 2 and her fees are ~ Rs. 8 lakhs/annum including food and transportation. They increase the fees 10% every year + an additional 20% when the kid jumps certain grade buckets. So as per my friend the per annum fees when she reaches class 12th will be Rs. 35 lakhs.”
Others proposed solutions, with one suggesting, “Homeschool your kids. Most school[s] are useless anyway.” Another recommended, “Should look for another school then. Private parents union is required.”
