Can Watching A Horror Movie Help You Burn Calories?
According to a new study, a 90-minute scare-fest can burn up to 113 calories which is equivalent to a half-hour brisk walk.

Do you find yourself on the edge of your seat, heart pounding, as you watch the spine-chilling horror flick? While it might seem counterintuitive to associate horror movies with health benefits, a study from the University of Westminster suggests that embracing the fear factor can actually help you shed some extra pounds.

Researchers at the University of Westminster delved into the physiological effects of watching horror films and stumbled upon a surprising discovery. According to their findings, a 90-minute scare-fest can burn up to 113 calories, equivalent to a half-hour brisk walk. Dr Richard Mackenzie, from the university, was quoted by the Guardian explaining, “Each of the 10 films tested set pulses racing, sparking an increase in the heart rate of the case studies.”

The secret behind this unexpected calorie burn lies in the release of adrenaline triggered by the intense stress induced by fear. As the pulse quickens and blood pumps faster through the body, adrenaline production rises. This surge in adrenaline not only suppresses appetite but also increases the basal metabolic rate, resulting in a higher calorie burn.

While not all horror movies are created equal in terms of caloric expenditure, some stand out as particularly effective in helping you burn those unwanted calories. Topping the list is the film adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling masterpiece, The Shining, which torches an impressive 184 calories. Following closely is the classic Jaws, responsible for a decent 161-calorie loss and the iconic The Exorcist with 158.

The rest of the calorie-incinerating lineup includes terrifying titles such as Alien, Saw, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Paranormal Activity, The Blair Witch Project, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and [Rec]. These movies are notorious for inducing screams, jumps and, as it turns out, calorie burns.

Before you embark on a horror movie marathon to shed those extra pounds, it’s essential to note that the calorie-burning effects were studied in the absence of snacks. Indulging in popcorn or sweets during your fright fest might offset the calorie-burning benefits. So, if you’re aiming for the full health advantages of your favourite horror movie, consider saving the snacks for another time.

Next time you’re debating whether to watch that bone-chilling horror film, remember that you’re not just in for a night of thrills – you’re also giving your metabolism a boost.

What's your reaction?
