The man caught on camera the whale shark during his fishing trip to the island.

Fatal shark attacks are extremely rare these days, but the sightings of fish are now a common phenomenon across the globe. There are a few major hotspots in Australia where swimmers often come in close contact with deadly sharks. In one instance, a man recently had a jaw-dropping encounter with an enormous whale shark off the shores of K’gari island along the southeast coast of Queensland, Australia. It was not any shark, but a massive one with thousands of teeth, making it one of the rarest species.

The man, Thomas D’Emilio, along with his friend Toby, recently embarked on a fishing expedition near the island. However, what began as a routine day at the sea took an unexpected turn after Thomas briefly went ashore. Later, as they resumed fishing, the duo noticed a gathering of birds and went to check for fish; however, it turned out to be something else.

The incident took place on 6 February, a video of which went viral on TikTok. The clip shows a colossal whale shark approaching the boat and the group of men saw it up close and personal. “We noticed some birds, so we went over to see if there was any mackerel or tuna with them. Then all of a sudden, a whale shark," D’Emilio said while recalling the encounter. The video was shared on the Facebook page of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, whale sharks stand among the largest fishes globally and can reach up to 46 feet and nearly 11,000 kg. Quite contrary to their imposing appearance, these whale sharks have more than 3,000 tiny teeth, are filter feeders, and pose no threat to humans.

While they are quite common in Australia’s beachy regions, their appearance near the K’gari island is a rare phenomenon. The last sighting was reported almost 4 years ago.
