New Delhi: South Korean electronics giant Samsung reported less favourable revenue for the second quarter despite heavily promoting its brand new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.
Although the new S6 Edge delivered a new design as promised, it did not translate into revenue for the smartphone maker as expected. Samsung’s operating profit slumped 4 per cent and the mobile division particularly went down to $2.4 billion from $3.8 billion.
Now, the smartphone maker has decided to slash down the prices of the flagship devices, apparently to cover the gap.
A report on Engadget notes that in order to catch up in the second half of this year, when Apple is set to launch its new iPhones to rival the Galaxy S6 flagships, the South Korean device maker has decided to ‘adjust’ the prices of both the new smartphones.
The company has also announced that it will be launching new premium smartphones at its August 13 event, possibly a new Galaxy Note and a larger Galaxy S6 Edge.
Analysts believe that the slump in profits could be attributed to Samsung’s inability to keep up with the huge demand for its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones. Whether this changes with the slated price cut remains to be seen.
Samsung hasn't yet announced by what per cent it would be bringing down the prices of the phones. At present, the Galaxy S6 (32 GB) costs Rs 39,850 while the curve-screened S6 Edge (32 GB) is listed for Rs 47,949 on e-commerce site Amazon.
