New Delhi: Samsung defeated Apple in terms of smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2015 even before its latest Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge started shipping, according to a new data.
Taiwan-based technology market intelligence firm TrendForce notes that in Q1, a total of 291.2 million smartphone units were shipped around the world and Samsung claimed 27.8 per cent of it, while Apple managed to come close second with 19.9 per cent of the total shipment.
As Digital Trends notes even as the preorders of Samsung's latest flagship devices on some carriers began on March 27, they were officially released on April 10.
The data also points to the decline in shipments from the 320.8 million units shipped in the prior quarter, which is attributed to a weak market in China.
The firm predicts that the gap between the two smartphone manufacturers will widen in the second quarter with the coming of new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge devices which have received positive response in the consumer market.
TrendForce forecasts that the worldwide shipment of the new Samsung smartphones will exceed 200 million units in the second quarter and the company will ship more than 80 million total units in the second quarter while Apple will ship slightly more than half 45 million units.
In the fourth quarter of 2014, the gap between the two companies was narrower with Samsung holding 24.7 per cent share and Apple at 23.3 per cent.
According to the latest data, China's Huawei came third, followed by LG and Lenovo.
