New Delhi: Google has already made travelling easy by telling you if there’s traffic ahead on your route. It now aims to make the ride smoother by telling you if there are potholes coming your way.

The search giant has filed a patent for a tech that would enable it to gauge if there are potholes ahead using your car’s GPS navigation system and other sensors, and use that information to show you a less bumpy route.

The technology will first monitor the vibrations your car is subjected to when you pass over a pothole and then cross reference that with the GPS data. This will allow it to pinpoint where the potholes exist and alert drivers about damaged roads, The Verge notes.

Although there is a similar program, called Street Bump, running from the last few years in the city of Boston, it only collects data from the drivers’ phones. Google’s program, if it makes it to the final product, is likely to offer more detailed and reliable data.
