New Delhi: Online marketplace Amazon wants to have a bit of virtual reality.
According to a filing at the US Patent and Trademark Office, the e-commerce giant seems to be interested in building smart glasses that would help the wearer see content streamed from a tablet in front of their eyes.
Much similar to Google's own Glass-project, the one by Amazon seeks to use augmented reality and be capable of transitioning from a video or image display into a transparent one.
A report on The Verge notes that because the display would not fully immerse the wearer in the virtual world, software could superimpose 3D images onto the physical environment, leading to what could be an interesting blend of the virtual and the real.
As with every patent, the possibility of having an actual hardware is unclear. However, if Amazon does build the smart glasses, it would allow the company to stream more content to the users through its Prime Instant Video service.
