In a grim reminder of the Pune Porsche hit-and-run case, Madhuri, daughter of Rajya Sabha MP Beeda Masthan Rao (BMR), allegedly ran over a man sleeping on a footpath in Besant Nagar with her BMW in Chennai on Monday night. Surya, 24, a painter, succumbed to his injuries soon after.
Madhuri, who was allegedly accompanied by a female friend in the car, was arrested, but soon released on bail. Reports said Madhuri was allegedly drunk at the time of the incident.
In the Pune case, two 24-year-old techies from Madhya Pradesh died after the speeding car, allegedly driven by a 17-and-a-half-year-old boy in an inebriated state, hit their motorcycle at Pune’s Kalyani Nagar junction around 2:30 am on May 19.
Madhuri’s father BMR became a Rajya Sabha MP from the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) in 2022. He is currently a member of the committee on agriculture, animal husbandry and food processing and committee for the ministry of commerce and industry, states his company website. Madhuri is the director of the BMR Group.

- BMR is a backward class leader from the Yadava community.
- He joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1983 , becoming an MLA from Kavali in 2004 and 2009. He lost to YSRCP from Kavali in 2014. In 2019, he contested from Nellore Lok Sabha seat, but lost.
- Rao joined Jagan Reddy’s YSRCP in December 2019.

A B.Com from Sri Sarvodaya College Nellore, affiliated to Sri Venkaeshwara University, Andhra Pradesh in 1975-78, Rao is the founding chairman and managing director of BMR Group of Industries, a shrimp farming and exports company which has plants in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Rao’s net worth is Rs 243 crore, with movable assets worth Rs 153 crore, and immovable assets at Rs 93 crore, according to his election affidavit.
According to the company’s website, in 1998, Rao was awarded the Doctorate degree in Aquaculture by the International University of contemporary studies for his extraordinary contribution in the field of aquaculture.
His contribution in the introduction of SPF Vannamei in the country during 2004-2009, has earned him the title “Father of Vannamei Farming in India", the website states.
In 2014, BMR Group of Industries was awarded the Best Hatchery award and also the largest supplier of shrimp seed in the country by MPEDA. In 2017, Rao was awarded the “Indian of the Year" award in recognition of his achievements that have contributed towards building the reputation of our country, the website adds.
