Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren will be the new chief minister after Hemant Soren resigned from the top post.
Hemant’s resignation came amid buzz about his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a land scam case. The federal question questioned him on Wednesday.
Champai, a senior cabinet minister in the JMM-led government, was elected as the leader of the JMM legislative party in a late evening meeting of ruling coalition MLAs.
JMM MP Mahua Maji said the CM reached Raj Bhavan to submit his resignation to the Governor with the ED team. Ruling coalition MLAs also visited the Raj Bhavan.
Jharkhand Minister and JMM leader Mithilesh Thakur said, “We have chosen our leader…Our CM will be Champai Soren…”
Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur said, “CM Hemant Soren has decided to resign. Champai Soren has been chosen as the new leader of the Legislative party… All the MLAs are with us…”
Jharkhand Minister Banna Gupta said the ruling alliance has requested the Governor for the oath ceremony
“We have chosen Champai Soren as the leader of the Legislative Party. We came to the Raj Bhawan to request the Governor for the oath ceremony,” he said.
Who is Jharkhand’s New Chief Minister Champai Soren?
Champai Soren is currently serving as the Cabinet Minister of Transport, Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Caste & Backward Class welfare in the cabinet of Hemant Soren.
Currently, the vice president of JMM, Champai Soren has held multiple portfolios in the past including Science and Technology, Labour and Housing, Food and Civil Supplies, Transport, Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Caste & Backward class welfare.
A five-time MLA, Champai was also a cabinet minister in the Arjun Munda government.
