For Every 10 Tourist Arrivals in India, 4 Are Women; Only 3 Indian Women Go Abroad of 10 Passengers

As per data from the ministry of tourism, the share of women arriving in India has ranged between 40 and 42 per cent between 2011 and 2023. The gender-wise data of outbound traffic is only available post 2019. The share of women in Indian national departures ranged between 28 and 34 per cent between 2019 and 2023.

The Indian national departures in calendar year 2023 stood at 2.72 crore — the highest-ever. The share of women stood at just 92.73 lakh against men’s 1.80 crore — almost double that of women. In 2022, there were 2.16 crore Indian national departures, including 69.13 lakh women. In 2021, when 85.51 lakh Indians went abroad, this share of women was 23.94 lakh. In 2019, there were 2.69 crore Indians who went abroad and the share of women was just 83.43 lakh.

Similarly, there were 92.36 lakh foreign tourist arrivals in India in the calendar year 2023 of which just 38.79 lakh were women.

The country-wise breakup of gender details of foreign tourist arrivals was latest available for the year 2022. While the proportion of females for most of the countries was in the range of 30-50 per cent, in 2022, for some countries like Afghanistan, Japan and Saudi Arabia, it was substantially low (less than 30 per cent). On the other hand, females outnumbered the males in FTAs in India from countries like Thailand (62.1 per cent), Vietnam (59.8 per cent), Kazakhstan (57.9 per cent), Ukraine (57.0 per cent), UAE (55.6), Mauritius (52.3 per cent), Myanmar (51.8 per cent), Indonesia & Philippines (50.4 per cent) and Bhutan (50.2 per cent).

As per the country-wise breakup of genders of Indian national departures, latest available for 2022, the proportion of female for most countries is in the range of 25 per cent to 50 per cent, for some countries like Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Poland, Nigeria, Sudan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, China, and Republic of Korea it was substantially low (less than 25 per cent) in 2022.

The top 10 countries for female Indian National Departures included Australia (48 per cent), Ireland (47 per cent), Israel (47 per cent), United Kingdom (46 per cent), New Zealand (46 per cent), Canada (46 per cent), United States of America (46 per cent), Pakistan (45 per cent), Hong Kong (44 per cent) and Switzerland (43 per cent).

For any economy, tourism is one of the largest foreign exchange earners. It not just helps in exchanging cultures but also plays an important role in economic development and employment generation in remote and backward areas.
