New Delhi: As the trends put the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the third spot in the state, the party on Tuesday conceded that it did not perform as expected in the 2012 Uttar Assembly Election.
Speaking exclusively to CNN-IBN, senior party leader Sushma Swaraj said that the regional parties such as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) had emerged strongly in Uttar Pradesh.
When asked about the role of former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti in the state assembly elections, Swaraj said that she was a mass leader.
Referring to the absence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who has been a star campaigner for the BJP in states other than Gujarat, she said, "Even when Modi was in Gujarat, he was wishing well for the BJP."
Meanwhile, BJP president Nitin Gadkari maintained that the poor performance of the Congress in Rae Bareli and Amethi showed that people had voted against the Central government.
Taking a dig at the Congress, Gadkari said that the Uttar Pradesh polls were prestige issue for Congress, adding that the BJP would analyse the results to prepare for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
He further said, "In UP, people have gone against the BSP and they supported regional parties," adding that the results of five states clearly showed that people had gone against the Congress and the UPA.
