New Delhi: The BJP in order to save Navjot Singh Sidhu who has faced criticism that he has not shown any remorse over the death of the road rage victim involving him, said that the former cricketer would apologise to the family of Gurnam Singh “at the appropriate time.”
Senior leader and party spokesman Arun Jaitly said that he would take Sidhu to apologise to the family after the current elections, including the Amritsar Lok Sabha bye-election in which he is a candidate.
He said "this is not the not appropriate time" to visit 65-year-old Gurnam Singh's family as Chief Minister Amarinder Singh's media advisor Bharat Inder Singh Chahal was with the family.
Jaitley expressed apprehensions Sidhu could be attacked, as it was election time in Punjab and the issue blown out of proportion by the Congress.
There has been criticism about the way Sidhu has been going around making remarks ever since he was convicted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which was later stayed by the Supreme Court.
He was renominated by the BJP after the apex court stay and is pitted against Surinder Singla of the Congress in the parliamentary bypoll.
The state Finance Minister referred to his rival as "a show boy, a comedian and a commentator" after they both filed nomination papers for the upcoming contest.
