Thiruvananthapuram: The clash between the CPM and the BJP workers in Kattaikonam near Thiruvananthapuram has left about 43 people injured from both sides including two policemen. The condition of one of the BJP workers is serious. The clash between two groups even before the candidates are announced is a matter of concern.

The clash occurred on Monday night while BJP workers were holding a protest. Their agitation was against revoking city master plan that was shelved two years back due to protest as there would be massive displacement of people. The BJP workers blamed the local MLA MA Wahid of the Congress and city mayor VK Prashant of the CPM. According to police, while the BJP workers were burning the effigy of mayor Prashant, the CPM workers got into a verbal fight stating that the mayor is not responsible. This led to pushing and shoving and stone pelting. The violence continued for almost one hour, injuring about 43 and damaging several vehicles and shops. Both sides blame each other for the fight.

BJP state secretary VV Rajesh said, “The CPM and Congress are trying to implement the same pattern in West Bengal. Some criminal forces supported by CPM infiltrated in the procession of BJP and very cruelly manhandled our workers including former state president V Muraleedharan. The police force was very partial; our workers were beaten in front of them. We condemn the police action.”

The CPM blames the BJP for the violence stating that their protest was based on a false political propaganda. Though the order was passed by the government, they were trying to divert this against the city corporation and mayor. The CPM also said that the local people in the area questioned the BJP workers when they were about to burn the effigy of mayor as the mayor himself participated in a protest against the master plan and that’s when BJP started the attack.

Kadakampally Surendran, district secretary of the CPM said, “The BJP knows that in a normal way they cannot win a seat here. So all former presidents are camping here are and trying to scare the people through violence. Media themselves have analysed the election results in UP and said that about 120 small and big riots were created and BJP got seats. These leaders are camping here and following the politics of violence. In our Trivandrum such types of violence was never heard of, the elections used to go on peacefully here, people fight on politics and ideology. BJP is trying to change that and is creating widespread violence”

The repeated friction between the two groups even before the candidates have been announced is a matter of major concern especially in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram where elections have been peaceful.
