New Delhi: The Congress has also joined the advertisement war with the BJP on Delhi Metro. A week after the BJP launched its election war by putting up 3400 posters of its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi inside the train coaches, the Congress has also put up over 1000 posters of Rahul Gandhi inside the Metro coaches.
In these advertisements, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi takes an indirect jibe at his principal rival Narendra Modi. The posters have a picture of smiling Rahul Gandhi holding a cup of tea with a slogan in Hindi 'Na Dahade, Na Chillaye, Na Jumlo Mein, Mazaak Udai - Hamaare Sanskar, Karo har jaati, dharm se pyaar' which translates to 'Neither do we roar or shout, nor do we mock others. Our tradition, love every religion and caste.'
For the first time in 12 years, the Delhi Metro has become an advertising ground for the political parties with the BJP taking a lead over the Congress. Delhi Metro carries more than 25 lakh passengers per day and makes more than 2700 trips connecting the entire city and its suburban areas like Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Faridabad.
"Metro is a place to get the best exposure. People of all age groups and classes travel in metro and spend 20-45 minutes at an average. They can pay attention to what these advertisements read. They are better than placing huge hoardings on road sides," Sanjay Kaul, a member of Executive Committee and spokesperson for Delhi BJP, said.
This is the first time that political advertisements have been allowed on Metro trains but the commuters feel that the advertisement are better replacement for the FMCG product advertisement.
Bangalore and Kolkata too have Metro serive. But, their coverage area is small when compared to Delhi, which has one of the largest networks in the World.
