Plane crash: UPA cancels anniversary celebration
The dinner to be hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday night has been cancelled.

New Delhi: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government's first anniversary celebration programmes have been cancelled following the tragic plane crash in Mangalore in which 158 people have been killed.

The dinner to be hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday night to mark the completion of one year of UPA-II in government has been cancelled. The UPA report card, too, will not be released on Saturday.

Singh expressed his deep condolences at the loss of life resulting from the crash. He spoke both to the Home Minister P Chidambaram and to the Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel who briefed him on the ongoing rescue operations being conducted at the site of the crash.

The Prime Minister has also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the family of those dead and Rs 50,000 to those injured from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic air accident in Mangalore. In a message, she wished speedy recovery to those injured.
