New Delhi: Backing the JD-U's decision to deny Lok Sabha ticket to veteran socialist leader George Fernandes on health grounds, his long-estranged wife on Wednesday, said he should be dissuaded from contesting the election.
“It is necessary to acknowledge reality, instead of egging him on to face the hurly burly and strain of a Lok Sabha election, his political aides should be firmly dissuading him (from contesting the election),” Leila Kabir Fernandes, who separated from him long back, said in a statement.
Mentioning the surgeries and head injuries Fernandes underwent in the mid 90s, she said, “Side-effects took their toll by 2006. Anyone witnessing his contribution in the Lok Sabha from 2006 to 2008 will bear witness to this.”
Maintaining that “if George was aware of his own situation, he would not step into the election area,” she asked, “if a child insists that he must put his hand into a flame, will we allow it just because he wants?”
Interestingly the party's denial of ticket to the veteran politician has led to criticisms from a section of party leaders who feel that he should have been given the ticket if he wanted to contest.
Earlier in response to a letter by the party, which requested him not to contest and accept a nomination from Rajya Sabha, the veteran leader had replied he was interested in contesting from Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha seat and not keen a nomination in Rajya Sabha.
