Lucknow: The BJP on Thursday demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav after the Supreme Court directed the CBI to go ahead with its inquiry in the disproportionate assets case against him.
"After the Supreme court asked the CBI to continue probe against him in the disproportionate assets case, Akhilesh Yadav needs to resign from the post as impartial inquiry is not possible against anyone occupying a constitutional post," BJP state chief, Laxmikant Bajpai told reporters in Lucknow.
To support his demand, Bajpai asked how Akhilesh would be able to cooperate in the inquiry as the chief minister and whether he would also go to CBI office for the purpose. The BJP leader also demanded judicial monitoring of the probe against Akhilesh to ensure that UPA government did not use the CBI as its "political tool".
Recalling as to how BJP leaders LK Advani and Madan Lal Khurana had resigned from their constitutional posts once their names figured in a Havala case, Bajpai said Yadav should also set an example and cooperate with the CBI after resigning.
Alleging that state government has failed to make proper arrangements for paddy procurement, Bajpai said BJP activists would stage protest dharnas next week at the DM offices all over the state and he would himself take part in one such protest in Chandauli district on December 19.
